Artist's Biography

My name is Vanessa Turner and I am the artist behind "Natural Expression". I was born in, and live on, the sunny island of Bermuda, a small island whose people and culture have always been an inspiration to me.

I currently work as Civil Engineer. Balancing a full time career, family, and my love of art can be very challenging at times. However, my love for art is a necessary part of me that maintains a special place in my life.

I have been drawing for as long as I can remember, from the days of colouring books, Crayola Crayons & mom's white walls! In 2003, with much encouragement and support, I began to enter my works in various exhibitions and by 2006, I began selling my work locally and online.

At the start of 2010, after a 3 year break from art, I vowed never to stop painting again, and began taking classes from the renowned Bermudian artist Sharon Wilson.

Artist's Statement and Philosophy

People mean a lot to me, they are often the source of happiness, laughter, sadness and confusion. I am intrigued by the series of personal transformations that people undergo in life to ultimately find a brief state of balance before the next series of transformations. Specifically as women, we are continuously transforming in marriage, careers, motherhood etc.

I aim to create art that addresses this very concept. I also depict the beauty of simple inanimate objects and the peace/tranquility of their balance with the rest of the world.

Everyone is on a journey consisting of transformations and balance. Portraying the energy in mine and yours is what I do. My art is an expression of my thoughts and experiences; from my soul, through my hands, and onto the paper as an offer to you...
